My Belgian Horse Story

My Belgian Horse. A story about Willem. Written by Jess T.

Last year I was looking for another horse, I already had a 15hh Connemara called Sonnet who I have now owned for 5 years (I got her when I was 12)

she is a wonderful mare and has taught me so much, but unfortunately I grew out of her and just kept her for light hacking, but anyway, as I said I was looking for another horse of which I could take to competition, do a bit of x country, show jumping and maybe dressage.

So I started looking all over the internet and viewed around 15 horses but none of them appealed to me. Some were too naughty, some were too big and some just didn’t seem right, then I finally found one which I thought was amazing he was 16.3 chestnut gelding who jumped 4ft with ease, so I paid the deposit and agreed to pick him up that weekend but the Friday before I was due to get him the lady said that she had sold him to someone else!

I was heartbroken but I just thought I shouldn’t let it get me down, so that Friday night about 5pm I got a phone call from one of my family members who told me that she had found a horse on the internet who was being mistreated, so we gave the people a call and went to see him that night, it was a 3 hour drive and I viewed him in the dark!!

when I got there the people explained to me that they had brought him from Belgian 18 months ago but the lady had had a car accident and was unable to pay for his feed or grazing so he lived in the stable with just 1 wedge of hay a day!!

As soon as I saw him, I knew he was the one I wanted.

and that the reason the other horse sold was because it just wasn’t meant to be. So I set down my deposit for the mistreated horse (his name is Willem) he is a 16h2 Belgian warm blood.

A few days later I had him home with me and paid the previous owner, I was so pleased to get him home.

The first time I let him out into his gigantic paddock with my other horse (Sonnet) he ran like the wind!! Now one year later he looks like a completely different horse, he has grown about 1 inch and a half and is no longer thin and weak.

He even follows me where ever I go, just like a dog!! he and my other horse get on really well and I can now ride him and he is making me a very very proud owner, and he definitely has a home for life.

I love both of my horses with all my heart and I am so pleased that I found him.
