A child should not start riding lessons before the age of 7.

A child needs to have enough coordination or strength to handle a horse or pony.

Besides the actual lesson it is imperative that a child learns Learn how to conduct himself/herself around an animal and the stables.

Take Riding Lessons
Without instruction you pick up a lot of bad habits.

In self-taught riding you may be able to ride a horse you are familiar with, but you will not have the knowledge to handle the horse in a crisis.

The horse will recognize the lack of skill and take advantage.

It may take years to become an expert rider

You cannot learn to ride as long as you have any fear
Fear makes you tense and there is no place for tenseness on a horse's back.

Right from the beginning start to take riding lessons with an instructor. Riding instructors will teach you proper riding techniques, ground handling, etc... that will benefit you very much, so you don’t from the start build in bad habits with your horse riding.
