After reading a book on clicker training, I first practiced on my dogs. My goal was to teach my pot belly pigs some new tricks. The dogs caught on very fast. I then tried it on my horse, Chelsea Morning. She is on stall rest due to sand colic. So, she is quite bored and I try to keep her entertained with toys and lots of brushing and short walks up and down our trail. I tried it with her. First I clicked and gave her a treat. I did this for a few minutes. I then showed her the "mark" any object she is to touch with her nose. I clicked as soon as she went close to the mark. I clicked when she touched the mark It was not as quick as I envisioned - but all horses are different and learn at different speeds and then I tried it on Tom our 10 year old Canadian...
Tom picked up the idea in a flash! Within 10 minutes I had taught him to count to two! |
