My Orphaned Horse
My story is about my old brumby Sage.

Graeme's story about his little orphaned Horse, old brumby Sage.

He wasn’t old when I got him, he just turned 3 months. His mother died and I, 15, then, had taken the responsibility of being his new dad.

When we grew up together, we did everything together. We were literally a pair made in heaven.

I was home schooled so every break time I went out and rode him until we both couldn’t breath.

One day I went out into the little forest land we had for our backwood.

We had 257 acres, so I ran for a while looking for a place to hide. I was upset because my mother and father were breaking up.

I ran and fell into a ditch and rolled down a hill, hit a tree then rolled into a hole in the ground.

On this little trip I snapped my left femur and shattered my foot.

I heard noises, then I saw the three or four large wild dogs come across the ferns and sticks. They were the ones eating our stock (sheep & goats).

I screamed. Yes, like a girl. Really loudly if Sage was to hear me. He must of followed me to the forest and lost sight of me when I fell. Because he came charging and did some sort of war dance to scare of the dogs.

It worked. But one came back and took a chunk out of his neck.

Still he strode on and kicked it away.

He bent over, looking at me. As if he wanted me to ride him.

I couldn't stand so I lent on him and pulled myself up, wobbled but held on.

We walked for 45 minuets. No stopping.

My parents ran to us. That’s when I fell down and fainted.

I woke up 3 days later, my leg in a cast and I still don’t know what happened to my foot. I was shocked and scared when they said Sage was dying.

His muscles were all torn.

But he proved them all wrong, and still going hard at 18 years old with a couple of kids on his back.

Me and Sage are still the bestest of friends, brothers almost.

Now my kids think he is some kind of super horse, with my youngest just at two loving his pony rides.

Sage is a friend and a dearly loved family member.
