Natural Mosquito Repellant

Natural Mosquito Repellant and Fly Spray recipes you can make at home

Fly spray is:

1 part cold-pressed olive oil

1 part apple cider vinegar

2-3 parts water (depending on how strong you like it, how sensitive your horse's skin is, etc.; I do about 2.5 parts water)

And 10-20 drops each of orange oil, eucalyptus oil, and lavender oil.

Works like a charm, makes them smell nice, and I swear the lavender oil mellows them out. I had to come up with this out of necessity after Scarlet had an allergic reaction to virtually every fly spray on the market.

Cowboy recipe for Bug repellant

Take one mason jar with a tight lid and fill it 3/4 full of olive oil

Add a head of garlic, slightly crushed and put it into the oil

Let that sit for about a week, shaking it up every couple days.

Its very strong, so keep out of the eyes, but if you use a foam paintbrush, you can paint it around the eyes, and in the ears, or wherever you’d like. Because its garlic, its also great to put between itchy teats. I also sometimes paint the lower legs. In the ears, no more ear gnats. Reapply as needed.

You can use this the entire summer, just by adding more olive oil. I advise making a new batch every year, just because it begins to go rancid after about 6 months.
